MILES FROM KINSASHA FIREWORKS

At the tail end of 2015, London-based artist Vivien Kongolo - who performs under the name Miles from Kinshasa - released a two-sided EP featuring tracks ‘IVRY’ and ‘KAYA’. It introduced us to an artist taking influences from his Congolese roots and British surroundings “interlocking urban production with gorgeously deep rhythms” and dealing with heavy emotions. Now MFK is back with ‘Fireworks’, another piece of soulful alchemy, propelled by shifting synths, steady beats, funky guitars, layers of Kongolo’s rich vocals and insightful lyrics. Around 1:52, the artist swaps singing for spoken word against a minimalist backgroup, “If I’m holding out on holding ‘cause I felt a deeper religion that you ‘aint willing to fathom ‘cause you’re pigeoned.” These intricate thoughts are extended further in the video for ‘Fireworks’, which begins with a short poem about resilience and determination while the camera pans across Dover coast and iconic white cliffs while MFK looks out to the ocean. Perhaps, his mind’s eye travels out further, say 5,697.8 miles to Kinshasa. - HT
